CRYOSURGERY
Cryopen treatment is a safe medically advanced Cryosurgery device. Unlike other cryosurgery treatments that are performed, Cryopen requires no anaesthesia before and importantly, has less scarring than other techniques of skin lesion removal.
Many treatments are now no longer being performed by your local doctor / GP or the NHS. Treatment with Cryopen requires very minimal post-treatment care. These very common and often persistent skin imperfections in the past would have required a visit to the doctor but now you can simply pop into our clinic and be treated in just a few minutes.
CRYOPEN
Cryotherapy (also known as Cryosurgery) is a safe and highly effective method of freezing and removing benign skin lesions such as solar lentigines (sunspots, liverspots etc), seborrheic keratosis and warts/verrucas. It uses highly pressured liquid nitrous oxide to destroy the tissue quickly and with little residual stinging.
CRYOPEN SAFETY
While liquid nitrogen works at a colder temperature (-196°C), compared to CryoPen’s nitrous oxide, which works at -89°C … the extreme temperature that liquid nitrogen works at is not required. Cell destruction in all benign tissues is achieved at -62°C, therefore nitrous oxide is sufficient to destroy any lesion without risking damage to the surrounding tissue.
CRYOPEN PROCEDURE
Performed with a tiny applicator, it is held to the skin imperfection and then liquid nitrogen is sprayed onto the unhealthy tissue. Dependant on the size of the tissue, it can take between 1-30 seconds. The skin is then allowed to thaw, and return to its natural colour. The process can be repeated on the same area, depending on the severity. We can treat 1-5 lesions per session.

How many treatments will I need ?
It is impossible to predict exactly , however most lesions require 1-2 sessions, there is a possibility for larger lesions you may require more sessions. For most lesions, cryosurgery is a permanent removal. Some lesions are harder to remove than others. In more delicate places eg the eye area, a shorter freeze time with a repeat procedure may be required to get a final result with the least damage to the surrounding skin. In other instances a deep lesion eg a wart may take several aggressive treatments to get final results
Is Cryopen suitable for everyone ?
Cryopen is suitable for most skin types although on darker skin there is a risk of permanent damage to the skin causing hypopigmentation (light areas). We can tailor the treatment to minimise the risk.
There are certain conditions that many cause problems with healing for example diabetes. A full medical history is always undertaken before we commence treatment.
What types of lesion cannot be treated ?
All melanomas and recurrent basal cell carcinomas. Melanoma can spread by any of several means including local, lymphatic and blood. Additionally, Melanoma will change to a much more aggressive form if part of the lesion is left behind undetected. Basil cell carcinoma is typically spread by local extension and you may need more extensive surgery if recurrence is suspected.
